Ming Place Chinese Seafood
7 Stars
13200 Northup Way
Bellevue, WA

Improbably located in a stip mall amid a stretch of auto-related stores in Redmond, this pretty place serves some of the Seattle area's best dim sum as well as a 200-item menu of Cantonese cuisine. For the most part moderately priced (except for bargain $2.99 lunch specials), Ming Place also provides diners with hard-to-find expensive items. "Superior" shark's fin soup, for example, runs $45 per person. ("High Grade" is only $13.50.) Abalone preparations range up to $55, and lobster and crab from live tanks can be pricey, too, depending on the season. Those are exceptions, however. What most diners will find remarkable is that they can obtain a whole Peking duck for $8.99. Originally a promotion price, it's become such a standard that it's likely to endure. Ordering the duck alone costs $28, but the promotion price kicks in when a party orders two other entrees. To distinguish itself from generations of substandard Cantonese fare inflicted on Americans, Ming Palace proclaims itself a haven of Hong Kong cuisine. That means Cantonese plus a few items—the Peking duck, Sichuan chicken, etc.—that have become as native to Hong Kong as pizza is to American cities. Expect lots of seafood and steamed, delicately flavored dishes along with more robust fare like hot pots, as well as familiar items like lemon chicken. The dim sum (appetizer-sized portions that add up to a lunch as expansive, and as leisurely, as one wishes) are presented on trays not carts, as is more common. The idea is to avoid items turning tepid and stale. If this might sound familiar to patrons of Renton's Greenery, it's because the two places share common ownership as well as the menu. —Deirdre Allen TimmonsScene:
